Dippel grandson gets commission
Norma Dippel, former long-time Tekoa resident now of Spokane, last week attended the 2011 ceremony May 24 in Colorado Springs to see her grandson, David L. Dye of Sandpoint, Idaho graduate from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Dye, son of Dennis and Karla Dippel Dye of Sagle, Idaho, is a member of the 2007 class of Sandpoint High School. His paternal grandparents, Dale and Pat Dye of Berlin, Wis., also attended the ceremony.
After a 60-day leave, 2nd Lt. Dye will be assigned to Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. During the leave he and three classmates plan to go to Africa and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro,
Dye’s parents, his brother John and aunt, Scotty Dill, also attended the ceremony.
Summer reading begins sixth year
Whitman County Library’s sixth annual Adult/Teen Summer Reading started Wednesday, June 1, and will continue through Aug. 31. All 14 branches will offer special programs designed to meet the interests of each community.
There will also be a countywide program. Participants who read or listen to three books and write a brief review will win a prize at the library and be entered in a drawing for both local and countywide prizes.
Pre-registration is required. Entry forms are available at every branch and on the library’s website. They can be submitted by email, [email protected] or dropped off at any branch.
Magician Dick Frost to perform at Malden
Magician Dick Frost will perform Friday, June 3, at 3:30 in the Malden Library. Frost will come to Malden to kick-off Summer Reading 2011, which continues each Thursday for six weeks. Sign-ups for all ages are now being accepted in the library and online at http://www.whitco.lib.wa.us.
Several local meetings are in the library. The Malden town council meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.
Malden Fence Menders, the booster club, meets at the library the first Thursday of every month at 10 a.m. Contact Fran Maxwell for more information.
Librarian Shannon Roe reminds residents that options for check out are not limited to the 1,500 items in the new Malden library. Residents can request any of the library’s 70,000 books, movies and audios delivered to Malden.
Clubs & Youth Groups
Rosalia Garden Club
Members of Rosalia Garden Club will sell plants at the Rosalia mini-park Saturday, June 4, from 9 to-2. Proceeds will be used for upkeep of the mini-park. Alice Hofmann is the chairman of the plant sale.
The next garden club meeting will be June 8 in Cheney at the new home of Betty Gingrich. Members will meet at the mini-park at 9 a.m. to share rides. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. Members will have lunch at a local restaurant. A tour is planned at Stillwater Gardens at Cheney from 1:15 to 2:15. Seven members May 20 attended the Inland Empire District meeting at Finch Arboretum in Spokane. Rosalia hosted the luncheon. Attending from Rosalia were Kathy Hilliard, Mary Rattenbury, Penni Barringer, Roseanna Hester, Leila Van Dyke, Viola Heinemann and MarvaLee Peterschick. Guest speaker Penny Simonson, coordinator for the WSU Spokane County master gardener program, talked on the history of the program which started in 1972. The second guest speaker was Steve Nittolo, horticulture manager for Manito Park. He talked about the upcoming Mirror Pond renovation project.
BIRTHS
A son, Joseph Henry Pritchett, born to Linda and Bruce Pritchett of Rosalia, May 25, 2011. The baby weighed seven pounds, six ounces and was 21 1/2 inches long. The baby joins two brothers, Sam and Ben.
