Eagles put state golf championship in bag















Eagles Erin Bailey, Erin Schuster, Michal Schuster and Coach Doug Schuster with their championship trophy. St. John/Endicott’s Schuster sisters helped complete the school’s trophy collection last week, bringing home the school’s first ever state golf championship.

Coach Doug Schuster marveled at the showing of his golf squad.

“It was a pretty proud moment,” said Coach Schuster who is also the father of the Schuster sisters.

Senior Erin Schuster earned a share second place, shooting 175 over the two-day tourney to tie with Riverside Christian’s Joy Attaway.

Schuster booked an 88 in Tuesday’s opener and followed with an 87 on day two.

Coach Schuster said Erin started Wednesday with a scorching 39 on the front nine, but late rains dampened her back nine with a 48.

Erin finished eight strokes off the 167 championship pace set by repeat champ Kira Powell of Odessa, dominator of the local golf scene all season.

Michal Schuster wrapped up 19 strokes back in the eighth spot with a two-day total of 186.

Michal shot 89 Tuesday, followed with a 97 Wednesday.

The combination of the two SJE finishes gave Eagles a 25.5 point team score to edge Warden which had four finishers in the top 20.

In boys play, Casey Brown of Tekoa/Oakesdale/Rosalia brought back a third place trophy after shooting 82-80 for 162 over the two days.

Brown’s day two total pushed him two spots over his fifth place standing after day one.

Ryan Baumgart of DeSales shot 74-78 for 152 to nab the state medal.

Colfax boys booked a fifth place team finish behind the 86-86 172 total of Tyler Stevenson and the 92-90 1821 of Kyle Johnson.

Stevenson’s finished 13th slot; Johnson finisth 28th.

Bear Creek won the state team title for the boys.
