Willson dominates state 3200 for lone local win in state finals

Powered by distance runner Morgan Willson’s 3200 meter title, the Colfax girls track team booked a fifth place finish in the state 2B championships at EWU in Cheney Friday and Saturday.

Running second for the past two years to Mikel Elliot of White Pass, Willson, now a junior, put away her first title early in Friday’s 3200 meter race. Starting in lane eight, Willson bolted across the field to the inside after the start and kept them behind her the rest of the way.

Willson’s winning time was 11:09.09, more than 20 seconds ahead of Kim Barry of Lake Roosevelt who tracked Willson for the first part of the race before losing ground.

Willson also added a second place finish in the 1600 and a seventh in the 800. Willson’s 5:16.29 mile trailed only Barry’s 5:14.98. Willson ran 2:26.3 in the 800, with Barry taking the title at 2:18.64.

With Willson’s showing and strong finishes in the relay event, Colfax girls team racked up 44.5 points. Pe Ell won the 2B title with 67 points.

The relay team of Amelie Bruya, E.B. Hatley, Hannah Harazin and Bailey Mackleit grabbed second in the 4x100 relay at 51 seconds flat, behind only the 50.55 of the Tacoma Baptist team of Ellie Spiro, Paige Narayan, McKenna Newfield and Cayla Vichot.

The same Colfax foursome clocked 1:48.83 in the 4x200 for a third place finish behind the Tacoma Baptist team’s championship 1:47.92 and Northwest Christian of Lacey’s 1:48.48.

The 4x400 Colfax team of Leah Heiner, Cassidy Vorderbrueggen, Hatley and Reagan Lowe finished third with a 4:15.67 behind Northwest Christian of Lacey’s 4:09.42 and Mount Vernon Christian’s 4:14.09.

Adding to the Colfax girls’ team total were Reagan Lowe, who took eighth place in the 400 meter dash with a 1:02.74, and Kim Heiner whose 8-0 pole vault gave her a share of fifth place. Grace Garguile of Crosspoint Academy took the 400 meter title with a 59.44.

Freshman Bailey Mackleit placed eighth in the 100 hurdles, finishing in 19.53 seconds after she sustained a fall at the midway point.

The Garfield/Palouse/Colton squad turned in Whitman County’s top boys finish, booking 17 points for a 13th place tie with St. George’s.

Chad Redman booked most of the GPC points, booking a second place finish in the 110 hurdles. His 15.25 second time was just a step behind state champ Matt Friese of Willapa Valley.

Redman also ran 41.31 in the 300 meter hurdles for fifth place. Derek Byrne of Riverside Christian took the title with a time of 39.67. The senior also added an eighth place finish in the high jump, clearing 5-10.
