Candidate filings in county heat up before deadline

Colfax will have a race for mayor this fall, as Councilman Thomas Huntwork Tuesday joined Carol Stueckle, who filed last week, as the only two candidates to thus far file for the post.

In-person filing began at Whitman County’s elections office Monday and continues through 5 p.m. Friday. Seats on city councils, as well as director seats on the boards of various school, park, cemetery and fire districts are up this year.

Races with more than two candidates will be on the ballot for the Aug. 16 primary, with the top two vote recipients advancing to November’s general election.

Another challenge was mounted by Kirby Dailey, who filed Monday to challenge incumbent Laura Johnson for her seat on the Colfax School Board. Johnson filed Tuesday.

Other contested races as of press time Wednesday included Sharon Schnebly and Mark Young for the position 1 seat on the Garfield town council; incumbent Dwight Lust and Nancy Anderson for the at large seat on the Endicott school board and Chuck Petras of Farmington versus Richard Bridge of Garfield for commissioner of Garfield Fire District 3.
