Charges filed on Colfax speedster

Formal charges were filed June 1 against William F. King, 26, the suspect who was arrested after officers said they conducted a high speed chase in the north end of Colfax May 26.

He has been charged with attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

King remains in jail under a $50,000 bond which was set for pre-trial release. Prosecutor Denis Tracy told the court the bail should be set high because King has 12 convictions dating back to 1999.

The arrest report by Deputy Tim Cox alleged King was spotted driving a red pickup at a high rate of speed in front of Jennings School. It said King continued out to Highway 195, then turned south into Colfax and again looped through the school area of Colfax on Morton Street at speeds up to 60 miles an hour. He then turned northbound onto 195 and traveled north.

The Nissan pickup truck King was driving was registered to a Pullman resident who was not aware it was missing, the arrest report said.

Panel certifies five for Colfax cop job

Five entry level applicants for an opening on the Colfax Police Department were certified June 2 during a meeting by the civil service board. Police Chief Bill Hickman said the department has also received applications for two people who have served with other departments. These two applications will also be reviewed for certification from the civil service board.

After the certification review, the applicants will be interviewed by the chief and two other members of the department who will forward a hiring recommendation to the mayor.

Gas-n-go at Corner

Colfax Police received a report of a drive-off from the Corner Chevron at 9:51 a.m. June 2. The driver of the Ford pickup left without paying for $31 in fuel. The truck was traced to a company in Dayton where staff members said they will send the station a check for the fuel. The driver apparently just forgot to pay for after he finished pumping the fuel, according to the police report.
