LaX Dollars for Scholars awards will top $100,000 over 10 Years

This month The LaCrosse Dollars for Scholars will celebrate its 10th anniversary and announce its 2011 scholarship recipients at LaCrosse High School’s graduation on Saturday, June 11. Since it began in 2000, LDFS has awarded $96,130 to LaCrosse High School graduates in pursuit of higher education opportunities. Scholarships earned are applied toward student expenses at the schools they will be attending next fall, including trade schools, two -year colleges, four -year colleges and universities.

A non-profit organization, LDFS raises money through donations and a biennial auction banquet which this year will be Saturday, June 18, during LaCrosse’s Farmer’s Festival celebrations. This year’s auction banquet includes a silent and live auction. Items up for bid include railroad speeder car rides, a scenic helicopter tour, and vacation packages. Butch Booker will be auctioneer.

A baron of beef or dill chicken dinner is included. Tickets for the auction banquet are available for $25 by advance purchase only through June 10. Tickets are available in LaCrosse at Startin’s Repair and the Bank of Whitman.

Lentil fest plans beer/wine tasting

Pullman’s National Lentil Festival’s poster unveiling and “Wine vs Brew” tasting event will be tonight, June 9, from 6 to 8 p.m at the Holliday Inn Express in Pullman.

This year’s poster was created by Julie Walker of Pullman and features all the colors of the Palouse

Guests can taste 12 wines or beers from Merry Cellars, Wawawaii Canyon, Paradise Creek Brewery and Palouse Falls Brewing Company. These local beverages will be paired with hearty appetizers by local caterers.

After tasting, guests will vote for the best beverage; beer or wine, and best pairing. Winners will take home a trophy to proudly display until next year’s competition.

Tickets will be $35 and include a choice of a commemorative glass, wine or beer.

Signed and numbered commemorative posters will be available for purchase for $20 along with 2011 souvenir t-shirts. Call the Pullman Chamber of Commerce to reserve a ticket.

Choral groups at Dahmen

Choral groups Trillium and Jellybeans will sing folk and early American music, gospel music and world music next Saturday, June 11, at Dahmen Barn in Uniontown at 7:30 p.m. Members are from the Moscow-Pullman area. Admission will be $7 at the door.

Only two sessions remain for Thursday Storytime in the Colfax Library, today, June 9, and June 16. Baby Time for ages 0-2 years from 10:10-10:30, Toddler Time for ages 2-3 from 10:30-11:00 and Preschool Time for ages 4 and up from 11:00-11:30. Families are invited for Pajama Storytime Under the Tree on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 p.m.

The Colfax Library starts Summer Reading with Matt Baker’s Comedy and Stunt Show next Friday, June 17 at 6 p.m. in the library’s meeting room.

Colfax Library for Play and Learn wil be each Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This free playgroup is open to infants, toddlers, young children and those who care for them.

Whitman County residents of all ages are encouraged to participate in our Summer Reading program. The theme is “One World, Many Stories”. Summer reading signups for youth or completion forms for teens and adults can be accessed from the library’s website or by stopping in at any branch of the library. Whitman County Gazettes from 1900- to 1912 can be viewed on-line? Last year the Washington State Library contributed a portion of the Whitman County Gazette to Chronicling America, which is a project of the National Digital Newspaper Program.

Whitman County Library also has copies of the Gazette from 1964 to the present. To view back issues of the Gazette, patrons can either look online or ask at the circulation desk for back issues in the collection.
