Scenic 6 Fiddle show set Aug. 6 at Potlatch

The 18th annual Scenic 6 Fiddle Show will be for Saturday, Aug. 6, at Potlatch High School. The show features regional fiddling and related folk music. The donation requested at the door is $5 for adults. Fiddlers and others wishing to participate can sign up from 5 to 6 p.m.

Potlatch Arts Council produces the show with the support of area sponsors and volunteers.

Each participant in the fiddle show will perform two tunes of their choice. Musicians in past editions of the show have performed on banjos, mandolins, guitars, harmonicas, dobros and accordions. Vocalists have also been welcome.

Potlatch Junior Jammers will open the show. The youth group includes string players under age 18 led by Mabel Vogt of Potlatch, an Idaho and Northwest Regional champion fiddler who has taught fiddle and directed the Jammers for 30 years.

Potlatch Presbyterian Lutheran Community Youth Group will be raising funds for their activities through their food and beverage sales from 5 p.m. through intermission.

“The fiddle show features music that is part of a living folk tradition practiced in this area,” said Vogt. “It’s a unique opportunity to hear an oldtime style of music that isn’t often heard in the commercial media.”

Emcee for the evening will be Anna Vowels, a fiddler who grew up in Potlatch and is now an attorney in Newman Lake.

Camping space for RVs or tents at Scenic 6 Park is available by contacting Potlatch City Hall.

Saxophone ensemble will play at Dahmen

The Quad-City Saxophone Ensemble will perform at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown July 30 at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be $7 at the door, with children under 12 admitted free. The sax ensemble plays music that was the popular music of its time, much from the ‘Heyday of the Sax’ (1910 - 1930).

Classical and light jazz are the main styles. The members’ saxophones include soprano, alto, tenor and baritone and the unusual saxes, soprillo, sopranino, bass, and contrabass.
