Appels mark 50th in South Carolina

David and Alice Herres Appel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren at Edisto Beach, S.C., in early June.

After they both graduated from WSU, they were married July 15, 1961, in Pomeroy. They lived in Spokane, Iowa, Tacoma, Southern California, West Virginia and Colorado while David was working for the US Geological Survey.

After retiring in 1994, David and Alice returned to the Colfax area.

Joining them at the beach were their children and their spouses, Jennifer and Jerry Butcher, Georgia; Charlie Appel, South Carolina; Janet and Mark Flut, Kentucky; Laurie and J.L. Martin, South Carolina; Tom and Sheila Appel, Kentucky; Angie and Justin Fiecke, and Michelle and her finance, Travis Messinger, all of Washington. Also joining them were their 20 grandchildren.

A return honeymoon trip to Orcas Island in the San Juans, a gift from their children, is scheduled for a later date.
