Palouse non-profit daycare aims to open

Gazette Reporters

The plan for a new daycare operation in Palouse continues to move forward.

From filing for a state childcare license to fundraising for operating costs, the non-profit group, Little Sprouts, is making strides toward their goal.

They aim to take over the existing service at Palouse School on Oct. 1.

It will be called Little Sprouts Childcare and Early Learning Center.

“We’ve done a lot in the last few months,” said Jens Hegg, president of the non-profit. “We’re definitely moving the right direction. We’re on track and looking pretty good.”

The center will operate in the school, just taking over for a school-funded daycare that was discontinued. The school leased the classroom space to the group.

Little Sprouts organizers are preparing now for more fundraising events, including a kids fair and obstacle course at Palouse Days, a dinner at the Federated Church of Palouse and a regional treasure hunt over the radio. Their goal is to raise $35,000 by Oct. 1.

Little Sprouts will offer an all-day preschool in partnership with the existing state-funded pre-school.

The Palouse School District will operate the daycare facility right up to the Oct. 1 takeover.

“We’re working in the background to make the transition as seamless as possible,” said Hegg.
