Roger Wallace Haner

Private family services will be conducted for Roger Wallace Haner, 75, Air Force retiree who has resided at St. John for the past 10 years. Mr. Haner died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Born Feb. 16, 1936, in Anacortes, to Wallace Roland and Stella Kimber Haner, he graduated from Anacortes High School in 1954 and entered the U.S. Air Force in 1954. He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, where he was a missiles technician and also worked on drones and bombers. Roger’s Air Force career spanned more than 20 years. During the Vietnam era he served in Korea and Japan.

He and Carolyn Kuney met on a blind date and they were married on Feb. 23, 1974, in Gridley, Calif. He was honorably discharged March 31, 1974, at Beale AFB, California. They moved to Burlington, Wash., where Roger began working for the Boeing Company. He retired from there in 1991 after working as an industrial engineer and as a scheduler in the painting hangar. They sold their home in 1996 and spent five years living and traveling in their fifth wheel travel trailer, mainly in the southwestern United States. They also spent summers in St. John and moved there permanently about 10 years ago.

He was a charter member of the Amateur Radio Operators of Skagit Valley and for years was call sign WB7 BDQ. He was also a member of the NRA.

In earlier years he liked to hunt and he dabbled with gold panning while living in California. He enjoyed fly fishing and salmon fishing and golf.

Surviving are his wife Carolyn at their St. John home; four children, Tammi Haner and Suzi (Steve) Smith both of Rimrock, Ariz .; Lisa (Jim) Thompson of Colfax, and Sondra Haner of Arlington; a sister, Donna Wiseman of Vancouver; six grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
