When it absolutely, positively has to get there...

This Ford Explorer SUV crashed into the Palouse Post Office last week. Postmaster Chris Langsett said he was closing up the office when he heard the crash.

“It was like an explosion,” said Langsett. “I actually thought a package exploded. Unfortunately, that’s the kind of thing we have to worry about these days.”

Langsett declined to name the driver, and Palouse Police did not return Gazette phone calls. Langsett said the driver was shocked but unhurt.

Langsett said police believe the crash likely occurred because the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. The car ended up in the post office’s bathroom, said Langsett, destroying the sink but leaving the toilet in tact.

Contractors were called in to patch up the building with 2x4’s and particle board. Langsett said he had to stay until almost midnight because federal law does not allow post offices to be left unsecured. Insurance agents are determining the damage before a full repair can be made.
