Reardan stops Colfax again after NE duo roars at state

After battling Reardan for a third time, Colfax finished with the number-two state trophy. In front with Coach Sue Doering are seniors Becca Hardie, Lauren Moore, Hannah Harazin and Misty Skelton. In back from the left are WIAA presenter Ken Lindgren of Oakesdale, Bailey Mackleit, Kori Goodewin, Taylor Lange, Taylor Larsen, Rachel Robinson, Kindra Kneale, Amelie Bruya, Andra Hamilton, Amara Huber, Sidney Huber and Assistant Coaches Shawn Kneale and Jill Solbrack. Assistant Cory Whitmore is in back.

Colfax and Reardan volleyball teams ripped through the state competition Friday and Saturday at the state 2B net finals in Yakima and then faced off in the championship game. Reardan again prevailed with another power win in three sets to defend the title they took last year.

“They just have too many weapons,” Colfax Coach Sue Doering noted.

The Bulldog girls, who stacked up efficient wins against three foes with a run of three-game wins, put the champs to the test on title night and actually took the lead in the second game, but Reardan’s big team bounced back to take the middle game and led Colfax for most of the final game.

Line score for the title win was 25-19 25-23 and 25-11.

Colfax in the second game chased Reardan until they cracked a 21-19 lead with Sidney Huber hitting two kills and Amara Huber dropping an ace. That put the Bulldogs up 23-20, just two points from a 1-1 tie and a possible turning point.

Reardan put Chantel Heath on the serving line, and she launched a quick serve attack which booked five points for the game win.

Colfax battled in game three to a 15-17 score before Reardan ran seven points for a 24-15 lead on the way to their second straight title.

Misty Skelton keyed the Colfax back court battle against the hard-hitting Reardan club with 16 digs.

The Bulldogs started with a three-game win over LaConner on Friday, 25-22 25-11 25-19. Doering noted Lauren Moore hit a string of seven serve points in the second game against the Braves to set the mode for the win. Taylor Lange also came off the bench with a string of serve points.

Score of the opening Colfax win Friday was 25-22 25-11 and 25-19.

After the first-round loss, LaConner linked three wins to finish in seventh.

The Bulldogs then advanced Friday night with a three-game win over Brewster, 25-13 25-16 and 25-18.

They faced off with Darrington in a semi-final round. The Loggers, topped by 6-1 Jessica Brooks, went into the semi game after two tough battles on Friday. They faded early against the Bulldogs, and Colfax landed in the title faceoff with a 25-13 25-15 25-10 win over the green club to qualify for Reardan battle number three of the season.

“We really had a great season,” Coach Doering noted. The Bulldogs this year started young, made some mistakes in their early matches and then came up with a consistent run of quality ball in the four-match run at the SunDome.

Doering noted Colfax serving and hitting played a key role with Amelie Bruya hitting all 47 of her launches and Moore missing just once in 55 shots.

Colfax hit 71-74 serving against LaConner with the three misses all coming in the first game to set the pace for the four-match, 12-game run at the dome.

Taylor Larsen finished with a 130-137 hitting mark with just seven errors.

Tourney stats: Amelie Bruya-102 assists, 5 kills, 5 blocks, 47-47 serving with 5 aces, 19 digs; Taylor Larsen- 47 kills, 15 blocks, 32-35 serving with 4 aces. 12 digs; Becca Hardie-12 kills, 10 blocks; Amara Huber-25 kills, 3 blocks, 50-52 serving with 4 aces; Sidney Huber-16 kills, 3 blocks, 6 digs; Hannah Harazin-10 kills, 1 block, 20-22 serving with 5 aces; Kindra Kneale-1 kill, 1 block; Misty Skelton-1 kill, 22-32 serving with 7 aces; 30 digs; Lauren Moore-54-55 serving with 14 aces, 21 digs; Rachel Robinson 15-15 serving with 1 aces, 18 digs; Taylor Lange-24-24 serving with 3 aces, 2 digs.
