The Colfax High School gym floor had its annual refurbishing
Dec. 21 and 22, custodians Randy Dugger and Wayne Varnes applied a water-based polymer to the floor which improves the dull surface after another year of foot traffic.
The project is often done in the summer, but two years ago it was pushed to Christmas break due to product not being available. It has remained a winter project, until next year when it will revert back to the summer.
The task began with cleaning, followed by light sanding and another cleaning. Then Dugger and Varnes applied a sealer coat and after a five or six hour wait, the final coat went on. After completion, the new surface required 72 hours curing time at 70 degrees.
Colfax Superintendent Michael Morgan said they gave it an extra day, due to not wanting to turn the heat that high for that long.
In the meantime, the high school’s wrestlers practiced on the stage in the auditorium and the boys and girls’ basketball teams practiced at Jennings Elementary.
The locks were changed at the Colfax gym during the process and will be turned back to the regular locks Dec. 28, said Morgan.
Tape on the floor to secure lids over holes for volleyball net poles will return. The tape is to secure the covers until they are re-drilled next summer.
