4 was the year of earthquakes. There were real temblors, of course, but also economic and political quakes.
The aftershocks are not over.
As for the real ones, a 7.4 quake struck Chile on January 2. In March, a devastating 9.0 quake slammed Japan which caused a tsunami that overwhelmed the country’s northwest coast. Nearly 20,000 were killed in the combined disasters. The tsunami damaged nuclear reactors in Fukushima Prefecture causing the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.
