‘Best of Palouse Magazine’
A new book, “The Best of Palouse Magazine” has been scheduled for release today, Dec. 1. The book is a compilation of articles which were published by Palouse Magazine from August of 1998 through December of 2009.
The book has been compiled by Sally Elder of Garfield who published the magazine with her late husband, Dan Bothell.
A “final issue” of the magazine, made up of material never previously published, is included in the first chapter.
The following chapters are presented according to subject under headings such as agriculture, business and transportation and commerce.
Elder said the project evolved out of requests by area residents to revive the magazine. That led to a discussion with Darcy and Andy Campbell of Cougar Graphics in Colfax, and the decision was made to put out the book which turned out to be 200 pages.
Cougar Graphics designed and printed the softcover book which will sell for $30.
Over the years of publication Palouse Magazine, with the help of its readers, presented scholarships to high school seniors. One of the requirements for applicants was to complete a local history project. The scholarships went to 25 students and totaled $7,200.
Elder noted the book project invoked memories of her late husband, Bothell, who died in 2007, and all the people they met and worked with in publishing the magazine.
Raised in Garfield, Elder graduated from WSU with a degree in communications. She and Bothell moved back to Garfield in 1998 from Snohomish County where they had been employed with newspapers. They started Palouse Magazine as a weekly in August of 1998 and it evolved into a monthly when they began publication of the North Palouse Journal weekly newspaper which was based in Rockford.
Elder plans to appear at Pat’s Books in Rosalia Saturday, Dec. 3, for a book signing beginning at 10 a.m. during the Rosalia Winterfest celebration. The book will also be stocked at Main Street Books in Colfax.
