Davenport departs Rosalia with Spartan tourney trophy

A furious fourth quarter charge gave Davenport the title of Rosalia High School’s annual Spartan Holiday Classic basketball tournament.

Down five at the half, the Gorillas rode the hot hand of Joey Gunning, who was doing just that in the second half, scoring the bulk of his tournament-high 31 points after the break and powering Davenport to a 66-55 championship game win over the host Spartans last Thursday night.

David Nelson put up 22 for Rosalia, but it was not enough as Gorilla shooters scorched the final frame to a 27-16 advantage. Ryan Zeller added 23 for Davenport.

Rosalia got into the final by cruising past Wilbur/Creston in Wednesday’s opener. The Sparts scored the first 10 points before ending the first half with a 38-14 lead. Grant Gelhaus and Craig Nelson put up 12 points each to lead the Sparts. Trystan Rosman had 14 for WC.

Davenport similarly rolled out early and cruised to a 65-34 opening win over Asotin. Gunning went for 15 points. Wyatt Ebers added 14 for the Gorillas. Nathan Scheibe’s 16 points topped the Panthers.

Asotin downed WC 53-34 in last Thursday’s consolation round. Scheibe had a game-high 16 points. Hayden Herdrick had 17 for WC.

LaCrosse/Washtucna also booked a tournament runner-up title last week at Dayton.

The Tigercats opened Thursday in thrilling fashion, squeaking past Wakiakum 60-55 in overtime. The ‘cats fell behind early, closing the first quarter with a 12-point hole. They climbed back out in the second and roared ahead in the third only to let the west coasties tie it at the end.

Jed Zimmer had 17 points and Darcy Stamper put up 13 to top the T-cats.

Friday, LW could not climb out of another early hole in the final versus Dayton. A 13-point Bulldog lead after the first frame expanded to 23 points at halftime as Dayton defended its tournament title with a 66-30 win.

Garret Turner booked a game-high 18 points for the D-dogs. Matt Stubbs’ seven points topped LW.

League-leading Colton returned to the hardwood Tuesday, with its younger brothers taking the limelight. Jake Straughan and Dalton Patchen led the Wildcats to a 70-54 win at Grangeville.

Straughan put up 19 points and Patchen 16 with 16 rebounds as the sophomores outshined their star senior brothers. Josh Straughan put up 13 points and Dustin Patchen threw down 11 and grabbed 13 boards.

St. John/Endicott booked a pair of non-league losses over the break, falling 46-50 to Liberty last Thursday night and going down 62-86 to Waitsburg-Prescott Friday.

Joey Kucklick had a solid week, throwing down 18 against the Lancers and another 14 against the Cards. Dakota White topped the Eagles Friday with 22 beans.

Zach Bartlow put up 31 points in the WP win. Match Burnham, son of St. John legend Blaise Burnham, tallied three points for Liberty Thursday night.
