Colfax 2nd-grade readers compete for Masonic prizes

A Washington State Masonic Grand Lodge reading program will mark its first year for second graders at Jennings Elementary in Colfax.

They will be evaluated on their reading from the fall to spring with the program concluding in May. Prize for the top boy and top girl will be a new bike.

“It’s designed with the intent and hope that young people will read more,” said John Henry, master of the Colfax Masonic Lodge. “We’re using books selected and recommended for them to read.”

The students are evaluated based on results of MAPS tests, given twice per year, scholastic reading inventory, one-minute reads which measure fluency, class reading performance and teacher observation.

“What a wonderful opportunity,” said Jennings Elementary second grade teacher Peggy Kehne. “What a nice project this is to show the importance of reading.”

The 27 Colfax second-graders who are participating choose books to read on their own. They also read one per week as a class and are tested on vocabulary and spelling using words from the book.

This week’s selection is a non-fiction book, “From Seed to Plant” by Gail Gibbons.

“My hope is that these kids will develop a life-long love of reading,” Kehne commented.
