Brothers power Colton charge through SE 1B

Colton’s sibling story pushed the league leaders to a double win weekend in league play.

In the SE bouts, the brothers Patchen and Straughan out-dueled each other to down league opponents.

Saturday, the Straughan brothers backcourt combined for 42 points and 13 assists in a 81-52 win over Pomeroy. Younger brother Jake led the Wildcats in scoring with 24 while elder Josh put up 18 of his own.

Colton rolled out of the gates, posting an 11-point lead in the first quarter and never let the Pirates up.

Dustin Patchen put up 22 points, and brother Dalton logged a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Patchen boys’ inside game powered Colton Friday night to a hard-fought 53-39 win over Garfield/Palouse. Dustin Patchen posted 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Dalton notched a 12-and-12 line.

The Vikings booked a league rarity by actually staking a 28-28 tie in the third quarter. Their not-so-secret answer to the Wildcat power game was mortar shots with sophomore Jessie Lopez booking four 3-pointers for the night as he racked up 16 points.

Colton went back into high gear for a 37-31 lead at the end of the quarter and added another eight points to the gap in the last quater.

St. John/Endicott also swept league play over the weekend, but the Eagles were edged by Odessa/Harrington 58-55 in a Tuesday non-leaguer.

Friday, the Eagles rode Cole McCanna’s 18 points to a 55-50 win over Pomeroy. A second quarter charge by the Pirates closed a seven-point first quarter gap to two, but the Eagles kept the hammer down for the win. Joey Kucklick added 13 for SJE. Riley Bott led three Pirates in double figures with 13.

Zach Hollingsworth’s hot hand from deep led the Eagles Saturday night to a 73-34 win over visiting Tekoa/Oakesdale. The ‘hawks actually opened with an early lead with Marcus Pluff taking a steal down the court and collecting, but the edge faded when the Eagles kicked in their speed game mix with solid shooting.

Hollingsworth canned five long bombs on his way to 17 points. SJE went on a 22-2 tear in the second quarter to put the game in the bag.

Cole McCanna posted a game-high 20 for SJE. Pluff had 19 to lead TO.

Evan Jones posted 13 points to lead three Eagles in double figures Tuesday, but a late charge by Odessa/Harrington netted 58-55 home win.

Rosalia firmed up a third place slot in the league standings with a pair of weekend wins.

Damian Loucks’ 19 points led the Spartans as they held off LaCrosse/Wastucna in a back-and-forth 45-42 Rosalia win. After the Spartans used a second quarter charge to post a 28-17 halftime lead, the Tigercats went on a 13-2 third quarter run to tie the game. Jed Zimmer put up 16 points to lead LW, but his three pointer at the buzzer fell off the mark, giving the Sparts the W.

Craig Nelson posted 14 for Rosalia, with Justin Wargo adding 12 for the T-cats.

The Spartans rolled out early and hung on late to sink Touchet 61-33 Saturday night at Rosalia. Loucks had 12 points to lead a balanced Rosalia attack that had 10 players find the net. Colter McKeown had 10 points to top the Indians.

LaCrosse/Washtucna charged late to sink Garfield/Palouse 58-52 Saturday at LaCrosse in the teams’ third and final regular season matchup. Jake Aune put up a game-high 20 points for LW. Wyatt Mitchell’s 16 were tops for GP.

Tekoa/Oakesdale fell to Touchet 54-60 Friday night, despite center Max Mueller’s 24 points. The ‘hawks put up a strong charge through three quarters, but the Indians heated up in the fourth.

Joe Gaines added 11 for the Nighthawks. Will Huesby put up 15 to lead Touchet.
