Colfax boys remained in the hunt for a top league finish at the start of the week with a 60-42 win over the St. George’s Dragons Monday night and a 58-33 win over the Liberty Lancers Tuesday. Both league rounds were on the home court.
Colfax booked the wins with their top scorer, Justin Berarducci, working short stints both nights. The Bulldog senior rolled an ankle in the first half Monday against St. George’s. He came back for a short time at the start of the half and then bowed out. Tuesday against the Lancers, Berarducci hit four points and played under 11 minutes.
Bulldog coaches plan to put him on light duty for the balance of the week before the team makes the Friday trip to Reardan.
Brandon Gfeller led Colfax both nights with 19 against the Dragons Monday and 18 against the Lancers Tuesday.
Gfeller made all 19 points from the field against the Dragons and hit three shots from outside the three perimeter.
Kile Johnson also hit three from the outside and finished with 11 against the Dragons.
St. George’s, which arrived with a 9-5 record and third place in the league race, played with senior Karl Mulheims out of the lineup with a concussion.
Will Tender again led the Dragons with 11 points, all of them from the field.
Led by Gfeller, Colfax shot over 56 percent against the Dragons Monday to stake the 38-12 lead. St. George’s came out steady in the second half and nipped two points off the deficit in the third quarter and another six points in the last quarter.
Colfax Coach Reece Jenkin also plugged in his reserve troops after the Bulldogs looked like they were out of reach.
Tuesday against Liberty, the Bulldogs again booked another Gfeller-Kyle Johnson shooting night. The duo totaled 33 points, more than half the Colfax total.
Gfeller plunked another perimeter shot and finished with 17, again all from the field. Johnson finished with 16 with two outside bombs.
Dylan Salsbury, who has had some big nights for the Lancers this season and Zack Kunkel each finished with eight points to lead the Lancers.
The Bulldogs Friday will travel to Readan to face the Bulldogs who are now in the middle of the league standings at 6-5. Saturday they will host a 4-7 LRS Brono team.
Last Friday’s snowed-out trip to Kettle Falls will be made up Monday.
