Bulldog girls run 3 wins to nail second-place finish

Colfax girls moved into a tie for the number-two slot in the Bi-County league which begins district playoff this week. Big move during the run of the last three league games went down Saturday at Colbert when the Bulldogs edged Northwest Christian 58-51.

The win at Colbert revenged a loss to the green club when they came to Colfax Jan. 18.

Both teams finish 13-3 in the league race. Both have been defeated twice by undefeated Reardan, the Bi-County dominators.

Rachel Robinson’s 14 points keyed the Saturday win at Colbert. Robinson booked a 6-8 night at the line, including a run of four straight toss shots at the top of a brutal fourth quarter.

Colfax jumped to a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept the margin until the Crusaders began to crank it up in the last quarter. Robinson hit four straight at the top of the quarter, and Amelie Bruya plucked the second on her two 3-point shots to get the Colfax lead to 14 points.

NWC continued to charge, but the battle went around a corner with just under six minutes left when Maria Guske and Morgan Willson collided on the court. The crash left Guske on the deck. Both sustained cuts and had to leave the gym.

Northwest got within four points, but had to foul for the ball. Bruya sank six straight toss shots down the stretch to end it.

The revenge win put the Bulldogs in second place because of the pre-season draw to resolve ties. Colfax AD Shawna Kneale drew the top card which gave Colfax the edge.

Colfax banked the number-two finish in their last home game Tuesday when they bounced the fourth place Davenport Gorillas 55-48.

Colfax at one point in the game had a 16-point lead in the first half, but Davenport came out to pick up fourteen points of the top the third quarter. They narrowed it to four with two minutes left, but the Bulldogs held them off. Robinson hit five of her eight points off the toss line in the last quarter.

Gorilla senior guard Miranda Mielke marked her last stop at the Bulldog gym by hitting 27 points, including a 6-6 off the toss line.

The last home game included honor night for seniors Willson, Hannah Harazin and Elizabeth Hatley.

The Bulldogs started the weekend Friday on their home court with a 49-9 win over a struggling Charger team from Mary Walker of Springdale.

The Chargers were blanked for two quarters in the league round at Colfax.

Northwest finished off their league run Tuesday with a big win over the same Springdale team. Colfax girls will play at Mead High at 5 p.m. Saturday to start their district run. As the number-two team, they will face winner of Thursday’s elimination round between the league’s number-seven team and Republic which lands in the District 7 playoff to start the state grid.
