Viking grapplers wrap up season

Garfield/Palouse wrestlers also finished their season at the Kittitas regionals last week. Freshman Trapper Askins placed eighth in the 120 weight class. He pegged a win in his first match and then lost the next two.

Askins finished 17-15 for the season.

Sophomore Kevin Knauff won his seeding match for a number-five ticket going into the regional, but he was stopped twice and finished a 22-12 for the year in the 160 class.

Colfax wrestlers Dayton Maltone and Justin King finished with sixth-place wins at Kittitas last week to qualify as alternates for the state meet.

The area saga of heavyweights ended with Jesse Billips of ACH taking a 1-0 decision over Mathew DeLeon of Warden in the title round.

Tory Knebel of Pomeroy defended his state title in the 170 class with 8-3 verdict over Hector Camacho of Warden.

Warden, which dominated the sub-regional show on their own mats three weeks ago, won the state team honor in Tacoma Saturday with 143.5 points. Reardan placed second with 119.5 points to top the Bi County entrants, and Pomeroy topped the SE with 69 points to finish fifth in the all-B section of the Mat Classic.
