Colfax begins search for new police chief

The hiring process for a new Colfax Police Chief started this week with civil service advertisements for the opening. Chief Bill Hickman, who has been a member of the police department since 1998, has submitted notice that he plans to retire later this spring, according to Mayor Todd Vanek.

Deadline for applicants to file for the chief’s job will be March 26.

Hickman was named chief of the department in June of 2006 after the retirement of Chief Barney Buckley. After his official retirement date with the police department, Buckley hired on with the city public works department.

Hickman served in the Whitman County Sheriff’s department for five years before joining the city police department. He was a brand inspector for the state Dept. of Agriculture for 11 years before joining the sheriff’s department.

Hickman is a 1976 graduate Colfax High School.
