Gordon Forgey: County teams take two titles

Two Whitman County basketball teams are state champions. The Colton girls won their fourth consecutive championship, and the Colfax boys took home their first B state championship since 1979.

Both teams deserve congratulations.

The Colton girls basketball team did it again. They are state champions for the fourth straight time—an unprecedented four-peat in the Bs. This year the team was undefeated—not only undefeated in post-season play, but undefeated throughout the season. Their season record ended at an impressive 26-0.

Colton clinched the title in a 55-47 victory Saturday night against Columbia of Hunters.

This is quite a string for them and an exciting and noteworthy accomplishment.

Also claiming state honors was the Colfax boys basketball team. This is the first state title win since 1979 for the Bulldogs boys team. Some of the members of that last winning team are now middle-aged business leaders in town.

It was a tough road that took the Bulldogs to the victory circle. They defeated Northwest Christian 51-40 to take the 2B title. Northwest Christian was the defending champion and a challenge throughout the season.

Congratulations to these and all the other Whitman County teams that competed this season.

Whitman County schools have a long history of athletic successes. More important, county schools also have a long history of academic successes. Exceptional seasons like these are the icing on the cake.

Details and photographs are in the C Section, a four page section dedicated to the state competition.
