George Ernest Hall

George Ernest Hall, 89, a long-time resident of the Portland area who was raised at Steptoe, died March 18, 2012. Mr. Hall resided in the Portland area for the past 40 years.

A celebration of life service will be April 21, at 11 a.m., at Valley Community Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon.

Born Sept. 18, 1922, in Rosalia to Ernest and Hazel Hall, he moved with his parents to the Steptoe area and graduated from Steptoe High School with the class of 1940. He then attended Washington State College before serving with the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He was employed in the heavy equipment division of Allis Chalmers.

He was a brother of Donald Hall of Steptoe.

Also surviving are his wife, June, three children, Dr. William Hall of Monterey, Calif., Marilyn (Kenneth) Brinster of St. Helens, Ore., and Edward (Diana) Hall of Vancouver, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Henry A. Nygaard

The funeral for Henry Andrew Nygaard, 90, was at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene March 20 followed by a graveside service at Freeze Cemetery at Potlatch. Mr. Nygaard died March 16, 2012, just two days after friends and family gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Born in Potlatch, Idaho, March 14, 1922, to Martin and Corinne Nygaard of Potlatch, he attended Potlatch schools and continued his education at Multnomah Bible Institute before joining the Navy in World War II. A 1st Class Electrician’s Mate, he served with the most highly decorated minesweeper crew in the U.S. Navy.

After the war he worked as an electrician for a variety of contractors, including Dean Pope. He retired from the University of Idaho’s maintenance department in 1988. His parting gift was the Willy’s jeep he rode around campus.

Henry married Erma Franklin June 26, 1949. She died in 2004.

Surviving are three children: Corinne Nygaard of Salem, Ore .; Janette (Bruce) Steffer, Brighton, MI; and Dean (Audrey) Nygaard, San Marcos, Calf .; and four grandchildren.

Hugh A. Shawgo

A graveside service with military honors for Hugh Anson Shawgo, 77, was Wednesday, March 28, at Memorial Gardens in Spokane. His ashes will be buried in the family plot at his request. The Rev. Dennis Evans of Washtucna Community Church officiated. A memorial picnic in Washtucna will follow at a later date.

Mr. Shawgo died at Hospice of Spokane March 20, 2012, after a battle with melanoma.

Born on the family farm near Rock Lake June 4, 1934, to Elmer and Ida May Evans Shawgo, he attended school in Ewan until his parents moved to Spokane in 1943. He graduated from North Central High School in 1952 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1953. He was stationed off the coast of Japan. He returned to the family farm and lived with brother, Emmett and wife Lorraine for 13 years. Hugh also worked for Millers and Sons near the family farm.

He married Grace Bostrum in 1969 and they adopted a son, Andy.

They later divorced.

He worked at Washtucna Grange Supply for 14 years and in the early 1980s moved to Newport where he joined his nephews as a partner in Shawgo’s Tire for five years.

He later moved to Spokane and worked in maintenance for KHQ and several assisted living/nursing homes for more than 20 years.

He met Sara Goude in Washtucna and they lived the latter years of his life there.

He was a member of the Washtucna Lions Club and was a volunteer fireman in both Newport and Washtucna.

Hugh also volunteered to the elderly and played Santa in schools, churches and nursing homes.

He loved to dance and will also be remembered for his great sense of humor.

Surviving are Sara of Washtucna, son Andy of Texas, three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lions Club, 240 Main St., Washtucna, 99371.

Paul Hart

The funeral service for Paul Hart, 88, former long-time Sandpoint, Idaho resident who made his home in Colfax for the past 12 years, was Monday morning March 26, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Colfax. Burial followed at the Pinecrest Cemetery in Sandpoint. Mr. Hart died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Whitman Hospital in Colfax.

He and his wife Emily moved here to reside close to his son and family, Dan and Becky Hart, and they made their home at Hill Ray Plaza. He enjoyed playing golf and had many friends at Colfax Golf & Country Club. He has attended Peace Lutheran Church.

Born Oct. 10, 1923, in Sandpoint to Marshall and Lucinda Klippenger Hart, he was raised in the Sandpoint area, graduated from Sandpoint High School with the class of 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator during World War II in the Pacific, including Okinawa.

After receiving his honorable discharge in 1945 he returned to Sandpoint and married Emily Erickson Nov. 3, 1946.

He worked for a Ford dealership in Sandpoint before they moved to Alaska in 1948 where he was a heavy equipment operator for a coal mining company near Fairbanks.

They returned to Sandpoint in 1955 where they resided on the family farm at Selle and he was employed as truck driver for a lumber company and later with McFarland Pole Co. where he retired in 1985.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sandpoint and the Selle Grange. He enjoyed hunting, especially for elk, huckleberry picking, skiing at Schweitzer Basin, traveling in their RV and playing pool. In their retirement years they spent winters in Arizona.

Surviving are his wife, Emily, at the home in Colfax; two children, Polly (Kent) Jones, Kenmore; and Daniel (Becky) Hart, Colfax, and three grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to Peace Lutheran Church, Coast Transport in Colfax, or Gritman Adult Day Center.
