Athenaeum

Twenty members met March 16 at the home of Kay Van Dyke for their semi annual business meeting .The first order of business was to complete club obligations for 2011-2012. The Civic Improvement committee suggested a $100 donation to the library’s “Whitman County Rural Heritage” project. The library committee suggested buying “Women and their Gardens: A History from Elizabethan Era to Today”. Both items were approved.

The Art Contest winners for 2012 will be announced at the April 6 meeting. Evelyn Hickman’s estate designated money for Athenaeum to have a sign welcoming travelers to Colfax Highway 26. The club hopes to complete a project next year.

New officers are Mary Ann Wigen, president; Kay Van Dyke, vice president; Mary Ann Mitchell, second vice resident; Phyllis Kincaid, secretary, and Dorla Dean Scholz, treasurer.

The budget for the coming year was presented and passed.

Katie Schmick’s program about Kathleen “Klondike Kate” Rockwell told about a woman who ran away from home and later enrolled in a boarding school. The school expelled her, and she joined a chorus line on the vaudeville circuit around Washington State, British Columbia, and Alaska. She partnered with Alex the Greek and when the partnership split and she received enough money to buy land in Eastern Oregon. Then she became a farmer.

In Hollywood’s movie portrayal of her life, starring Mae West, the real Klondike Kate was disappointed in the costuming and the way her morals were portrayed. Klondike Kate was proud of her costumes which came from Paris and thought that Ms West was too trashy.

P.E.O. Chapter AF met March 26 at Peace Lutheran Church with Queenie Leinweber as hostess. Nancy Waldron presented a program on her rope art.

The Yearbook committee distributed 2012-2013 books. Theme for the year “My Favorite Things”.

Officers for the new year are Liane Smith, president; Robyn Johnson, vice president; Karen Groom, recording secretary; Teri Heilsberg, corresponding secretary; Diane Solbrack, treasurer; Shirley Richardson, chaplain; Jill Solbrack, guard.

Convention delegate will be Liane Smith with Marsha Binder alternate.

The next meeting will be April 9 at Peace Lutheran Church with Liane Smith as hostess and the program by Sherry Cox.

SJE 4H club

St. John/Endicott 4H Club annual Easter egg hunt will be April 7 at 10 am in the St. John City Park. Little ones up through third grade come join the fun.

Boy born to Gyllings

Micah William Gylling was born March 9 to Matt and Amanda Gylling of Tacoma. Weighing seven pounds, two ounces at birth, he is their first child. Maternal grandparents are Mike and Cheryl Karr of Redmond and great-grandmother is Lois Karr of Woodenville. Paternal grandparents are Paul and Debbie Gylling of Colfax and great-grandparents are Delores Lindhag, Archie and Alice Allenbach of Colfax and Judy Gylling of Walla Walla.
