After an extended stay in Colfax, a pair of moose trotted east along the South Fork of the Palouse River Saturday morning. Reports of the female moose and her yearling calf have been received over the past few weeks. Pictures were submitted to the Gazette and sightings of the moose were reported on Thorn Hill, along the S curves south of Colfax, on the south hill and, finally, on Upper A Street along the South Fork of the muddy Palouse. The moose browsed on yards, trees, uncultivated areas and car windows.
Spotters Saturday discredited the earlier belief of the moose calf being born in Colfax, believing it rather a yearling as young moose stay with their mothers for two years. After traversing a driveway and a couple backyards, the yearling turned east and followed the tracks out of Colfax. About 10 minutes later the mother was observed trotting earnestly eastbound on the South Palouse River Road.
