Eagle girls take SE district golf title

After claiming their second straight district golf title, St. John/Endicott’s girls head to Lakewood next week in search of a repeat state championship.

The Eagles topped SE competition Tuesday in the district championship at Wine Valley Country Club in Walla Walla. The Eagle girls last year claimed the school’s first ever golf championship.

SJE golfers head to Lakewood next Tuesday and Wednesday for the state all-B championships at Oak Brook Golf and Country Club.

Michal Schuster topped the SJE entry, bagging an 80 Tuesday on the par 72 course. Combined with the 87 Schuster shot in the first round last week at Palouse Ridge, Schuster bagged the number two spot in the district tourney with a two-day total of 167.

Schuster finished eighth in last year’s state championship tournament.

Eagle Devan Bafus shot 106 Tuesday for a 226 district tourney score and seventh place. Sierra McCanna’s 109 at Wine Valley gave her a 234 overall for ninth place.

DeSales eighth grader Emily Baumgart carded a 73 on her home course Tuesday for a two-day total of 163.

Though Baumgart and teammate Alexa Montgomery finished first and third in the tourney, the Eagle two-seven-nine combo gave them 53 team points for the district title.

The Irish had 50 points, followed by Tri-Cities Prep’s 33, Pomeroy’s 18, Liberty Christian 14 and Asotin 12.

Cole McCanna was the top SJE boy at District play, shooting 81 Tuesday for a two-day total of 170, good for sixth place. Eagle Dakota White carded 88 Tuesday for a 175 district total for ninth place. Both scores put the Eagle boys in the state finals.

Ryan Baumgart of DeSales shot 76 Tuesday and 149 overall to claim the district championship.

DeSales racked up 89 points in team scoring to easily claim the district team title ahead of Asotin’s 33 points. Liberty Christian finished third with 28 points, and the Eagles 27 points were good for a share of fourth place with TCP. Pomeroy had 25 points for sixth place and Waitsburg/Prescott’s 17 points were seventh.
