Facing a limited supply of tickets to the state 2B track show in Cheney this week, tracksters in the SE district had to scramble to extend their season to the state finals. The two-day track show at Clarkston High offered three state tickets for each event on the girls side and two on the boys side.
The St. John/Endicott-LaCrosse/ Washtucna girls team placed second in the eight-team event with 97 points behind the 189 rolled up by Asotin’s Panther girls.
Distance veteran Heather Siegel won the 3200 with a 12:13 after cutting 11 seconds off her prelim time the pervious day. Siegel also placed second to Lucy Eggleston in the 1600 final after winning the event in the prelims.
Tekoa/Oakesdale/Rosalia won the 4 X 400 relay by over three seconds at a clocking of 4:31.69 in the finals. Melissa Groom, Courtenay Perry, Olivia Pakootas and Maddie Bogenrief were on the teams. The same team qualified with a third in the 4 X 200 relay finals.
Pakootas placed second in the high jump and second in the 400 meter behind WP’s Kristin Potter.
SJLW girls qualified with a second-place finished in the 4 X 200 with Annie Fleming, Annie Bailey, Rachel Gfeller and Gretchen Van Lith clocking 1:55.51. The same crew earned a ticket in the 4 X 100 with a 54.26 back of the 52.73 win posted by Asotin.
Van Lith placed second in the long jump at 16-4.5, and Cassie Thompson of Garfield/Palouse/Colton placed third at 14-7.5.

Freshman Shania Bailey of SJLW placed third in the 800 with a 2:37.10 to qualify for state.
Kaleb Simon and Darcy Stamper of SJLW were the lone Whitman County winners on the boys side. Simon, who placed third in the triple jump prelims, came back Friday and took the event with a jump of 40-5.75 , more than a foot over his best mark Thursday.
Stamper turned in a consistent 6-2 both days to take the high jump.
Jeff Kent of Garfield/Palouse/Colton earned a return to state with second-place finishes in both sprint events. Kent again tracked James Thompkins of Waitsburg/Prescott who booked wins in the 100, 200 ands 400 finals.
Kent was .2 back of Thompkins in the 100 and .1 back of the WP flyer in the 200. Kent also qualified with a 10-6 in the pole vault, second to the 11-6 cleared by Michael Martinez of Asotin.
