Distance, relay battles top state track final at Cheney

Led by a fifth-place team finish by the Colfax girls, Whitman County track entries returned home with a sizable share of the medals from the two-day state track finals at Eastern Washington University. With Whitman League schools consolidating, all local entrants competed in the 2B division.

The Bulldogs finished in fifth place behind the 76 tally stacked by Pe Ell for the team win.

Asotin’s girls, the SE’s power club, bested the Bulldogs with 50 points for fourth place.

Colfax senior Morgan Willson defended her title in the 3200 and picked up another win in the 1600 to finish out a fabled track career at Colfax. Willson also placed fourth in the 800 race and ran a leg in the sixth place Colfax 4 X 400m team.

One of the feature battles Saturday pitted the Bulldogs against Tacoma Baptist in the two sprint relay races. Coaches had been checking out the cross-state times of the two clubs, and the state showdown met expectations. The Tacomans took both events with a .51 win in the 4 X 100 and a .2 in the 4 x 200.

Amelie Bruya , E.B. Hatley, Hannah Harazin and Bailey Mackleit finished out a solid year on the Colfax sprint teams.

Coach Jason Cooper noted the relay teams were ready to go and put up their best races in the showdown with Tacoma Baptist.

Another relay charge for Colfax came in the boys 4 X 100 when the Colfax team clocked a 44.84. That was the fastest relay time Coach Cooper has clocked in his 11 years as a high school coach.

“Those guys really worked on that all year,” Cooper noted.

The race ended with Colfax anchor Austin Corean on the heels of the anchor runner from Morgan/White Pass, winners of the event at 44.18.

Sophomore Nicole Sheer ended a solid run in the shot put with a 33-2.75 for seventh place behind Asotin’s Kayla Loop, the only hurler among 16 finalists to get the shot over the 40 mark. She finished with a 42-2. Piper Loop placed third for the Panthers and McKayla Swearingen place fourth.

Another second place for the boys came in the high jump Friday when Justin Berarducci and NWC’s Reuben Clark faced off for the last time. Clark won it at 6-5 after a dicey call on attempts and passes. Berarducci cleared 6-4. The two seniors finished out a rivalry which extended from battles in the paint during the last two basketball seasons.

Gretchen Van Lith topped the SJELW entry with a 16-8.5 in the long jump behind the 17-7 win by Alissa Brooks-Johnson for Pe Ell.

Garfield/Palouse/ Colton boys, who collected the academic award, ran into bad luck when state veteran Jeff Kent was stopped by injury Friday in the prelims. Kent was awarded a special sportsmanship award Saturday for doing volunteer work on the last day of the giant meet.
