The girl golfers from St. John and Endicott successfully defended their state golf title at last week’s state B championships, while the Colfax boys returned with a second place showing.
Led by third-place finisher Michal Schuster’s two-day score of 174, the Eagle girls scored 32 points to claim the title with a half-point edge over District 9 foe DeSales.
SJE Coach Doug Schuster said his squad was able to shake off the “absolutely miserable” conditions of wind and driving rain to put up the showing on the par-72 Oak Brook Golf Club in Lakewood.
Schuster shot an 86 in the second round last Wednesday, May 23, to add to her first day score of 88. Schuster trailed only defending state champ Kira Powell of Odessa/Harrington who shot 85-85 for 170 and Emily Baumgart of DeSales who shot 86-86 for a 171.
Tyler Stevenson of Colfax shot 86-82 for a fifth place total score of 168 as the top county boy golfer at the state finals.
Colfax scored 94.5 team points to trail the 109 put up by a DeSales squad led by Ryan Baumgart’s individual championship score of 151.
Also placing for Colfax were Hunter Weitze, 16th at 176 (95-81), Kyle Johnson, 23rd at 180 (93-87) and Kasey Johnson, 25th at 182 (83-99).
Other girls on the Eagles card were Devan Bafus 12th at 214 (108-106) and Sierra McCanna, 18th at 214 (106-118).
Paige Mackleit of Colfax placed 14th at 220 (108-112). She was the lone girl on the Colfax golf team.
Eagle Cole McCanna finished 27th in the boys tournament with a 93-93 two-day score of 186.
