A total of 319 Whitman County high school seniors are on the graduation rolls for 2012. The county’s total class size has dropped slightly from the 323 listed for graduation last year.

However, the figures reflect a steep drop for the county’s smaller high schools. Colfax and Pullman added 35 students to the rolls, but that was offset by a drop in smaller districts.

Commencement ceremonies around the county began last Saturday, June 2, and will conclude at the end of the week, June 9.

Colfax, Colton, Garfield/Palouse and Pullman graduates received diplomas Saturday.

Colfax graduates numbered 56 on Saturday, an increase of 12 over the unusually small class of 2011.

A total of 176 Pullman High seniors were listed to graduate at Beasley Coliseum Saturday evening. Pullman’s count of seniors was up 23 from the 153 graduates last year.

Garfield/Palouse awarded 21 diplomas Saturday. The grad count was down seven from last year.

“An eclectic group of intellectuals, athletes, artists, mechanics, writers and scientists,” said counselor Diane Mylett. “They have been a wonderful group to work with, and we wish them all the best. They are ready for a bright future.”

In Colton-Uniontown, all 15 graduates of Saturday’s class of 2012 are headed to college.

“It was another great class of kids coming through,” said school counselor Jeff Briney.

Tekoa Saturday awarded diplomas to 14 seniors. Their departure was joined by Connie Marsh who will retire after 38 years as a family and consumer economics teacher.

Also, retiring at Tekoa will be the school’s longtime head of maintenance, Bob Zehm.

A class of 12 graduated from St. John/Endicott in a ceremony Sunday afternoon.

Rosalia will graduate 14 seniors June 9 beginning at 2 p.m. in the gym.

Seven seniors will receive diplomas at Oakesdale June 9 at 1 p.m.

Five LaCrosse seniors are slated to return Friday from their class trip to the big island of Hawaii. They will graduate the following morning at 11 a.m. at Plowman Gym.

Departing the LaCrosse School scene with them will be Pete Bryan, who is retiring after 13 years as a maintenance man with the district.
