Zella Miller receives Spokane royalty honor

Zella Miller, former Colfax farm woman, was honored as the queen of the Celebrate Life Pageant, culminating in a ride in the Lilac Parade May 19.

The annual award is given by the Washington State Association of Activity Professionals (WSAAP).

Miller, 94, rode in a 1948 Packard convertible driven by longtime volunteer Jerry Scollard. Right behind them in the parade was the Prosser High School marching band.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” said Scollard. “She was so excited, she said it was one of the most memorable experiences of her life. She had a smile on her face when we started and when we went home.”

A total of nine elder facilities participated this year in the pageant, which puts residents in competition, answering questions and telling their life stories.

Miller was crowned the winner April 24 at the pageant in the auditorium of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Spokane’s South Hill. It was hosted by KHQ News’ Dave Cotton and George Maupin.

Miller’s crowning also earned her a spot at the Lilac Festival’s royalty luncheon the day before.

Next, she will will ride in the Flag Day parade at Fairfield June 16.

Zella was born in Portland and grew up in Colfax. She married Frank Miller in 1935 and raised three daughters on the farm. Their daughters are Mavis Jensen of Post Falls, Karen Curtis of Ritzville and Myrna Kneale of Colfax.

As a senior citizen, Miller moved to Spokane and started volunteering at Deaconess and Valley Hospitals. She has lived at Good Samaritan of Spokane Valley for the past five years.
