Lamonters bag bears in Alaska

Lamont

Sandi Swannack and Steven Engles along with their friend, Keith Pigott from Tacoma, recently traveled to Alaska to hunt coastal black bears.

They flew into Ketchikan and then boarded a DeHavilland Beaver float plane for the trip to Prince of Wales Island.

They rented a Suburban and drove to Craig, Alaska, where they stayed at the Kingfisher Lodge.

They hunted with the Suburban for the first few days and then changed to a 16 foot skiff.

All three hunters killed bears, Sandi’s being the largest.

Her bear scored a 20 inch skull and was six and a half feet long which qualifies as a trophy bear.

The boar weighed about 450 pounds and was between 10 to 15 years old.

They also caught two king salmon before they came home.

One was 22 pounds and the other was 17 pounds.

The fish were just starting to come into the fishing area for the year.

They were there for 10 days and say it was the adventure of a lifetime. Of the first six days there, the best day of weather was when it rained two inches. The first bear was killed on day five by Sandi and it rained four inches that day.
