Serving Whitman County since 1877
Oakesdale third and fourth graders came to the Farmington Library and Community Center to learn about the town’s history and the part it played in the development of the Palouse.
Colleen Duty, who was born and raised in Farmington, gave a lesson on the history of the town, its people and the homes.
The story of Matilda Sager, owner of a hotel, livery stable and funeral parlor that once stood in the downtown area brought history to life for the students.
An antique quilt once owned by Matilda was displayed for the students by Diane Hurley; the quilt had been given to her grandmother, Tilly Hayfield, by Matilda.
Colleen assembled four large binders on the town’s history that is now in the Farmington Library’s reference collection.
The students went to the Mountain View Cemetery for more history and a chance to straddle the state line with one foot in Idaho and one in Washington.
