Colfax Bulldogs rolled to Boise State last week for three days of football camp. Coach Mike Morgan said the Bulldogs took 37 players to the camp session last Wednesday through Saturday.
Colfax was the smallest school participating in the camp, and they went up against some major schools during the football drills. Grand Junction, Colo., with an enrollment in the 2,000 range, was the largest school foe they faced.
They also played against larger Washington schools like Prosser and Richland.
The Colfax troupe included nine seniors, four juniors, eight sophomores and 16 freshmen along with all of the coaching staff .
Morgan said three other seniors who are expected to be on the roster for next season couldn’t make the trip.
Last year the Bulldogs graduated nine seniors off the team which stacked up an 11-0 record before they were stopped by Waitsburg/Prescott in the state semi-final round at Pasco.
Coach Morgan noted the small junior class turnout is a concern going into the season, but the tally of 16 freshmen who made the Boise trip was pretty encouraging.
Teams at the Bronco camp run a shotgun scrimmage rotation which puts alternating offensive units against a single defensive unit.
The format speeds up the action because alternating offensive teams have plays ready to go as soon as the previous play concludes.
Team rotate after four plays to keep the action moving.
Final day of camp action includes a 30-minute, running clock scrimmage with a single team. The Bulldogs paired up against Grangeville in their scrimmage session. The Grangeville Idaho champs took the win with two TDs against just one for the Bulldogs.
Coach Morgan noted the Colfax jayvees evened the score with a 14-12 nip of the Grangeville jayvees.
Bulldog football will now go into its summer weight training mode with the training room open to players from seventh grade up. The training room will be open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday with sessions starting at 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.
