Palouse board tables daycare debt matter

Palouse school board June 28 discussed past due accounts owed by parents when the school district operated a non-profit childcare center from 2004 until 2011.

The care center, Little Sprouts, now operates independently in a space rented from the school.

“I understand the sensitivity of the issue,” said board president Mike Dymkoski. “I’m just not comfortable with a shrug and an oh well and we move on.”

The board discussed collection agencies.

“I think they would take these accounts and slowly chip away at them,” Dymkoski said.

He asked for the thoughts of new Palouse Superintendent Jake Dingman.

“I can appreciate the needing to collect the money and the responsibility to pay, but at the same time, do we go there?” asked Dingman. “There’s levies coming up, and we’ll need community support.”

Dingman, Dymkoski and the board talked about different options for collection agencies.

“There’s gentler ones, I’m assuming, then there’s the kneebreakers,” said Dymkoski.

The board president and Dingman agreed that more information was needed to move forward.

“We don’t commit ourselves if we just look into it and get information for the next meeting,” said Dymkoski.

The matter was tabled until July.
