Farmington voters will be asked Aug. 7 to decide on whether to fund $10,000 for streets and $15,000 for general maintenance in special levy proposal.
The proposal follows last November’s failure of a $32,000 package of levies for street and general maintenance, along with equipment.
A 60 percent majority is required for the measure to pass.
Mayor Ron Dugan sent out letters to the community this week regarding the proposal. Ballots for the primary will be sent July 20.
“My philosophy is, I think the collective wisdom of the voters far exceeds that of any political figure,” said Mayor Dugan. “We’re not gonna go bankrupt without a levy passed but there are things we can’t do.”
He indicated these items to be road grading, dust suppression, roofing on park structures, weed control and taking care of gravel and junk on streets.
“All you can do is make the best case you can and leave it up to the voters,” said Dugan.
Farmington now has a two part-time maintenance workers who split a half-time job. Mayor Dugan said that many Farmington residents have offered to cut grass on town property adjacent to theirs.
“We have a lot of volunteers. If we didn’t have them, we’d be a lot worse off,” Dugan said.
