California guests join Relay for Life

Several Dusty area residents participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Colfax Friday and/or Saturday.

Saturday afternoon visitors at the home of Karen Broeckel were Tom and Joanne Nolan Stewart and Kyle and Kirstin of Pacific Grove, Calif. The Stewart family was part of the O’Nolan team at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Joanne is the niece of Cliff and Jeanette Nolan.

Guest speaker at morning worship services at the Country Bible Church near Dusty was the Rev. Steve Szasz from Moscow. Morgan Willson provided the special music.

Word has been received of the death of Tom Kimmel, husband of Joanne Krom Kimmel of Talent, Ore., July 4 following a brief illness. Tom and Joanne were married in 1951, and they lived in many locations in the United States and around the globe when he served in the Air Force and then with the Federal Aviation Administration. Joanne was raised in the Dusty area and graduated from LaCrosse High School with the class of 1950. Her brother John and sister Virginia Sanders still live in Whitman County.

Returning to Vermont following a visit at the homes of Bryan and Fran Jones, were Bruce and Hanna Jones and family. Fran’s daughter Gena Jones and family also arrived at their home in Italy after a visit in Dusty. Sharon Urtaza of Las Cruces, N.M., spent a few days at the Jones family farm while her cousins were here.

Wes and Jen Claassen and children spent two weeks driving to southern California. They visited Disneyland and California Adventure before driving north to San Luis Obispo to visit at the home of his grandmother, Lorene Collins.

Last Saturday, Jan Smith’s sister, Dianne Morris, picked up their mother Irma Stueckle and came to the Smith home for lunch and a visit. Joining them were Dianne’s two daughters, Karen and Kris, and two granddaughters, Brooke and Avery, all from Spokane.

Sunday afternoon, Bud and Judy Aune, Dale and Vicki Broeckle, Durand and Roberta Cox, John and Kay Krom and Sharry O’Hearne attended the Chef’s Cook-Off at the Hill Ray Plaza. The event, part of the Pullman Art Walk, was organized by Steve and Donna Holberg, chefs at Hill Ray. Artists, including Vicki Broeckel, also displayed their work.
