Summer Reading tops 30 at Tekoa
Tekoa Library Summer Reading for kids was a great success. Youngsters 0-12 who completed over 10 hours of reading numbered more than 30 and were rewarded with prizes and goodies provided by Tekoa businesses, according to Diane Harp, Tekoa Library branch manager.
Teen and adult summer reading continues through August 30. The library has a large selection of free paperbacks on the exchange rack. They are books which readers are not required to return. Normal Tekoa Library hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:30–6 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
McCroskey House series starts Aug. 2
Garfield’s McCroskey House will launch its First Sunday brunch/lunch Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A total of 10 percent of the proceeds from the four-date series will go to the new, non-profit Seedlings Childcare Center in Garfield.
Located on Highway 27 near the north end of Garfield, McCroskey House was built in 1898 and is listed with the USA National Historic Register.
The First Sunday series will continue Sept. 2, Oct. 7, Nov. 4 and Dec. 2.
The Aug. 2 menu will featured grilled salmon, garden green beans, asparagus, Cougs in a Blanket, fresh-baked cinnamon rolls and Lentil Crunch with yogurt and fruit. The cost is $8 for adults or $5 for children under 12.
Colfax grads plan buffet luncheon
Colfax alumni noon luncheon will be in Spokane Monday, Aug. 6, at the Timber Creek Buffet located in the Argonne Village Shopping Center. All are invited to attend and enjoy conversations with old friends. You do not need a personal invitation and all classes are welcome. Children’s
musician plays today at Neill
Victor Johnson, who specializes in traditional styles of acoustic music for kids and families, will perform today, July 26, at Neill Library in Pullman from 10:30-11:15 a.m. He will also perform at Reaney Park from 6 to 7 p.m.
Johnson, an award winning writer, musician, performer and producer from the Pacific Northwest is back by popular demand for another highly entertaining musical performance.
Friends of Neill Public Library is sponsoring the concerts.
“Sound of Music” billed for CHS
“The Sound of Music” will be the fall musical production for the Colfax High School stage this year. Director Cary Cammack said the cast calls for high school, junior high and elementary students in the third through sixth grades. The cast will include up to 40 students.
Audition information will be available at both schools during registration. Auditions will be conducted during the first week of school. Performance dates will be Nov. 15-21.

All 14 branches of Whitman County Library will close for maintenance week Aug. 6-12. Many services will still be available through the library’s website including downloadable audiobooks and e-books, requests and renewal and 24/7 online librarian. Families are invited to a free PG movie screening Thursday, July 26, at 1 p.m. in the Colfax Library’s Norma McGregor’s Community Room. This free movie is about three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle.
Spies in training, ages 12 and up, are invited to a training program Thursday, July 26 at 4 p.m. at the Colfax Library.
Learn how to download e-books and audio books from OverDrive Tuesday, July 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Participants are encouraged to bring in their electronic devices with cables and personal laptops.
Summer Reading 12 and under can exchange their completed reading log for a prize book at the Colfax Library between now and mid August.
Teens and adults Summer Reading continues through Aug. 31. Summer Reading completion forms can be accessed from the library’s website or by stopping in at any library branch.
Summer Stage productions
PULLMAN CIVIC THEATER—Stage adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, July 26-29. Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie stumble upon the mysterious land of Narnia and find themselves in the midst of a war between the evil White Witch and the forces led by the lion Aslan. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinee , July 29, 2:30 p.m.
IDAHO REPERTORY THEATRE— Annie Baker’s renowned Circle Mirror Transformation ,. Aug. 16-18 and 23-25, 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Aug. 19. and 26. . The play follows a small group of students enrolled in an adult dramatic acting class for six weeks. On the top 10 list for the New York Times and the New Yorker.
REGIONAL THEATRE OF PALOUSE— Oliver!. The musical version of Charles Dickens’s beloved novel about orphan Oliver Twist and the colorful characters he meets in the streets of 19th century London. Aug. 23-25 and Sept. 5-9; 7:30 p.m. Matinees August 25, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m.

‘Big Latch On’
set at 3 sites
Local observances of a syncroniized breastfeeding event, “The Big Latch On” will be next Friday, Aug. 3, for one hour starting at 10 a.m. at the Whitman County Health office in the Public Service Building and in Reaney Park at Pullman. Another session is slated for Aug. 4 from 10 to 11 in the East City Park in Moscow.
The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action organizes World Breastfeeding week which is celebrated in 120 countries and marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF document which lists the benefits of breatfeeding plus global and governmental goals. The first Big Latch On took place in Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2005.
Lind earns degree
Brendan Lind of Pullman graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. Also, he and Eileen Lai , also of Pullman, were named to the Dean’s List for the spring 2012 semester. To qualify for the Dean’s List in the College of Arts & Sciences, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.
