Palouse slates third ‘under the stars’ event

The Bank Left Gallery/Bistro and downtown shops in Palouse will have their third annual shopping and dining “Under the Stars” event Aug. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.

All downtown shops will stay open until 7 p.m. for a night of live music, antiques, wine, art and food.

The Bank Left Bistro will feature an evening French breakfast from 7 to 9 p.m. Moscow jazz musician Geoff Allen will perform.

meetings off

Whitman County Library board of trustees and the Friends of the Library will not meet in August as is outlined in the bylaws for each organization. Next regularly scheduled meetings at the Colfax Library will be Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. for the Friends and Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. for the board.

St. John after hours

The second teen after-hours program at the St. John Library will be Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. for students in grades 6 - 12. Games and how to use henna to create temporary tattoos will be featured.

Bracken daughter born

Trinitee Lynn Bracken was born Aug. 8, 2012, at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center at six pounds, 10 ounces, to Cicelia Bracken of Colfax. Maternal grandparent is Bonnie McLaughlin of Colfax. The baby joins a sister, Kylee.

ART

WSU Museum of Art: Faculty focus exhibition by artist Jo Hockenhull, Aug. 20-Sept. 22. Opening reception Aug. 30 6 p.m. in the Museum of Art Gallery with a lecture to follow at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

The museum has a long-standing tradition of presenting work by faculty members. Since 2004, these exhibits have alternated large group shows with a bi-annual exhibit showcasing a recent retiree.

Hockenhull came to WSU in 1973 as a printmaker and was the first woman hired to teach in the WSU fine arts department. Her work reflects particular times in her life.

She has often incorporated scientific research into her work, with ideas of humans in relation to the natural world, and more recently, ideas of “loss” or “regret” as inevitable occurrences.

The museum is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium. Hours: Monday – Saturday, 10 to 4; open until 7 on Thursdays.

This exhibit is funded by the Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Arts Endowment Fund.

Whitman County Library invites teens and families to a free PG-13 rated movie at the Colfax Library Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. This 2012 American science fiction film is based on a novel by Suzanne Collins. Due to license restrictions, the library can not advertise the title outside its doors.

Whitman County Library along with Book Bear will enter the Lentil Festival Parade Saturday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m. in Pullman. For more details go to the event’s website: http://www.lentilfest.com.

A fire, police and car seat safety program will be at Eells Park in Colfax next Thursday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. Kids can have a hands on experience with sitting in the safety vehicles, trying on fire-fighting equipment. A certified car seat technician will be on hand to offer information on proper installation of child seats.

The Whitman County Rural Heritage exhibit featuring 30 images from the county’s past is on display in the lower level foyer of the Norma McGregor Community Room. The exhibit features a number of images from private and never before seen collections. Funding for the exhibit was made possible from a number of sources including Whitman County Library, the McGregor Co. and Whitman County Preservation Funds. The complete Rural Heritage collection can be viewed online at http://www.whitco.lib.wa.us.

Library Services and Technology Act funding administered through Washington State Library made the collection possible.

Summer Stage productions

IDAHO REPERTORY THEATRE— Annie Baker’s renowned Circle Mirror Transformation ,. Aug. 16-18 and 23-25, 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Aug. 19. and 26. . The play follows a small group of students enrolled in an adult dramatic acting class for six weeks. On the top 10 list for the New York Times and the New Yorker.

REGIONAL THEATRE OF PALOUSE— Oliver! The musical version of Charles Dickens’s beloved novel about orphan Oliver Twist and the colorful characters he meets in the streets of 19th century London. Aug. 23-25 and Sept. 5-9; 7:30 p.m. Matinees August 25, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m.

Colton library news

Colton Library today, Aug. 16, will offer a cupcake class at 6 p.m. Participants can decorate their own cupcakes and receive recipes to make and decorate cupcakes at home. The class is free and the cupcakes and frosting will be provided. Participants are asked to bring any frosting tips and piping bags they might have. Ages 12 to adult are welcome.

Children ages 1-12 are invited to a pajama party at the Colton Library next Thursday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 p.m. Librarian Holly Meyer will lead a craft project, read stories and have popcorn. Children should wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed animal.

Two weeks remain for adult and teen summer reading. Completed entry forms need to be returned by Aug. 30 in Colton or Aug. 31 online to receive an individual prize and to be entered into the prize drawings.

Children’s Summer Reading finished with 37 children completing the program in Colton. Storytime will resume for children ages 1-6 Sept. 10 and continue Mondays at 10:30 a.m. during the school year.

Scholz on UW honor roll

Erin Scholz of Colfax was named to the dean’s list at the University of Washington for spring quarter. To qualify, students are required to achieve a grade average of 3.5 or higher on 12 graded subjects. A member of the 2009 class of Colfax High School, she will be a senior at UW next year.

• Ease the weekday-morning time crunch by planning your wardrobe on the weekends. Use a single hanger to gather everything you need for a smart, pulled-together look. Attach a plastic sandwich bag with accessories to the hanger with a clothespin, and you’ll be dressed in minutes.

• If your bananas start to brown on the outside, put them in the fridge. They’ll still get brown, but the inside will stay firm instead of getting mushy.
