Pearson resigns Colfax school board seat

The longest-tenured Colfax School Board member has resigned her seat.

Effective Aug. 31, Debbie Pearson will resign after seven years representing District 5.

She began as an appointee in 2005 when Joel Aune was superintendent.

“My kids are out of school, I felt it was time to step down and let someone new come in,” said Pearson.

In her time on the board, she presented diplomas to all three of her children, including Samantha this year, Megan in 2010 and Kristyn in 2006.

Pearson started her tenure on the board after Jim Kroll vacated his seat.

“It’s hard work, and yet it’s rewarding, and it’s important,” said Pearson. “I thank the administration for doing a very good job during a difficult financial time. It’s tough being a boardmember, it’s really tough being an administrator.”

Since Pearson is in the middle of a term, her seat will be replaced by an appointment. The board will announce their search Sept. 1 and keep it open for 30 days. The board will then conduct interviews and name a new member.

The board has 90 days from the date of a resignation to replace the person.

“I would hope that in the next two board meetings (after the 30-day period) there will be a new member,” said Colfax Superintendent Michael Morgan.

District 5 extends from Colfax to the Steptoe School District border and to the edge of the Gar-Pal District to the Pullman Highway. It includes Hauser Addition.
