TOR will open league play after big win over Lancers

The Nighthawk gridders of Tekoa, Oakesdale and Rosalia got a chance to show their future Friday night as the young back-ups got plenty of playing time in a 50-6 drubbing of Liberty.

With its veteran offensive line clearing the way early, the TOR option team of Ryan and Steven Maley ran roughshod of the Lancers to put a 20-0 first quarter lead on the board.

Coach Kaleb Madison then decided it was time to give his youngsters some playing time. Freshman tailback Cody Thornton made the most of the opportunity, racking up 80 yards rushing and punching in a pair of touchdowns.

“That kid knows how to go 110 miles an hour,” Coach Madison commented.

The ‘hawks put another 18 points on the board in the second quarter before allowing the Lancers to run back a kick-off to paydirt for their only score of the game.

TOR put another 12 on the board in the third for the final margin.

Madison credited his defense for blowing up the Liberty attack, particularly nose tackle Max Mueller who busted up double teams all night.

TOR travels to Tri-Cities Prep this Friday to open league play against a Jaguar squad that runs a pro-style veer offense.

“We just have to play disciplined defense and stick to our assingnments,” said Madson. “You take care of a lot of things when you can do your job and rely on the guy next to you to do his.”

The Jags most potent weapon is quarterback Evan Whitsett.

“He’s little, he’s fast, he’s squirmy and he can throw,” said Madison.
