Thrift shop sale

The fall half-off everything sale for the Thrift Shop in Pullman will be Tuesday, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, noon to 4 p.m. The shop is located on WSU’s College Hill in the basement of the Community Congregational-UCC Church on the corner of Campus and Ruby streets. Parking in the church lot is free while shopping.

A portion of the proceeds go to several local charities and non-profits. Donations are accepted 24/7 in the little house on the corner.

Bank Left exhibit

The October exhibit at Bank Left in Palouse will feature five artists who will display photography, ceramics, oils and prints. They are Susan Swan, Filemon Dominguez, Armando Pacheco, Tamara Helm and Linda Dillard.

A reception will be Saturday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 5 p.m. followed by an artist dinner at the Bank Left Bistro Oct. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The gallery and bistro will be open during Haunted Palouse evenings.

Belly dance

class to start

A new session of basic belly dance classes will start Monday, Oct. 8, with sessions from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Gypsy Spirit Belly Dance invites interested parties to come enjoy the traditional music, food and costumes and see what belly dance is all about.

This basic class is designed to strengthen core muscles and provide basic belly dance skills in an active atmosphere for all ages and all body sizes.

Instructor Lynn Johnson has been dancing and performing with Il Rawazi Baten for more than seven years under the instruction of the regionally renown Shaheena Safahari.

Garfield library dates for October

Garfield Library’s event schedule for this week includes a teen craft session Oct. 14 at 4 p.m. with making bottle cap necklaces on the agenda, a craft day Oct. 17 to make suction cup spiders, a Halloween safety and disaster preparedness day Oct. 22 from 4 to 6:30 p.m., and a “Spook-tacular” Oct. 31.

Melvin will play at

Dahmen barn

Laddie Ray Melvin will perform at the Dahmen Barn Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7:30. As a songwriter, he carefully crafts his lyrics and surrounds them with music from the American folk tradition. Country, blues, folk and folk rock are all colors he works with as he sings of life, death, family, love, hope and our shared humanity. His songs have been played on the long-running Northwest Public Radio show, Inland Folk. Dan Ross, KEWU, the inland northwest’s only jazz station, has played cuts from the Melvin’s Rocky Ground CD, and Ray has appeared live on Spokane public radio’s “The Nacho Celtic Hour” hosted by Carlos Alden, and on “Sound Space” hosted by Norvel Trosst.

Admission will be $10 at the door.

Guy-Albion meeting

Guy Albion Historial Society annual meeting will be Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. with a potluck at the community building. The museum will be open for viewing. New officers will be voted in.

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Athenaeum Club

Members will begin a new year Friday, Oct. 5. The annual homecoming tea will be at the Community Bible Church beginning at 1 p.m.

The program will be given by Barbara Morgan. All members are urged to attend.

Patchin’ People

Fall festival for Patchin’ People Quilt Guild of Pullman, Oct. 4, 5 and 6, will feature award-winning quilt artist, teacher and author Rose Hughes from California. The dinner and program will be today, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at the Gladish Community Cultural Center in Pullman. The dinner and lecture admission will be $30. Classes, for an additional cost, will be Friday and Saturday at the 1912 Building in Moscow. For more information and tickets, contact Gloria Long.

Colfax Book Club

The first book club meeting at the Colfax Library branch will be Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to participate can stop by the library and pick up a copy of Jamie Ford’s, “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet.”

Palouse Promenaders

Palouse Promenaders, a non-profit square and round dance club based in Moscow, but serving other local communities as well, is offering square dance lessons to interested people this fall. Dance lessons are Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lena Whitmore Elementary School in Moscow

Peyton Jayanne Shields was born Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, at six pounds, 15 ounces, The is the first child for Angie and Andrew Shields of Lamont. Maternal grandparents are Lynn Knott of Colfax and Alan and Darleen Knott of LaCrosse. Paternal grandparents are Carrie Shields of Lamont and Ed Shields of Harrington.

Whitman Samplers will open the seventh season of Meet the Artist tonight, Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Charlie Hochsprung, Judy Imler and others will share their tricks and secrets for creating quilts.

Celebrate Colfax Hullabaloo at the library on Oct. 5-6 with hours expanded to 7 p.m. Friday and 9-5 on Saturday. The library will host a quilt show; a Wii Tournament; Slinky the Clown, children’s author Marcy Campbell and a book sale.

A new session of Flex and Flow Yoga begins Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and runs through the end of November. Classes are $10 each or $35 for the session. To register, contact Suzy McNeilly.

Teen Craft Day at the Colfax Library will be Wednesday, Oct. 10 beginning at 3 p.m. Come learn the art of making bottle cap Jewelry with Teen Librarian Chelsea Leachman.
