Serving Whitman County since 1877

The presidential election is coming fast.

Although “election day” is not what it used to be, what with all the early voting and vote-by-mail options, election day is Tuesday, November 6.

Despite the ticking clock, there is still time to register to vote. A presidential election with all the other federal, state and local races is no election to miss.

Two deadlines are here now.

Mail-in registrations must be postmarked by this Saturday, October 6. Forms are available online or at the elections office in Colfax or Pullman City Hall.

Electronic registrations must be completed by October 8, next Monday. Information is available online.

These are immediate deadlines, but there is more time for in-person registration.

For in-person registrations, the deadline is October 29. In-person registrations can be completed at the county elections office or Pullman City Hall. Changes of address can be made at these locations, too.

The final deadline, of course, is Tuesday, November 6. Ballots must be postmarked or turned in by this date, but only those registered to vote need to be concerned about this one.

About those flags

The effort to line Main Street in Colfax with flags should have been heralded as a good idea. American flags graced Main daily for several years. It has been a long standing tradition to fly them on holidays.

Flags brighten the town and welcome travellers. They give motion and color.

With all the hype surrounding Cougar football and the anticipation of bigger crowds on game days, putting up WSU flags is a no brainer. At other times, it would be wonderful to have the American flags posted again.

The attempt to line the street with color and significance is a good one. It should not be bogged down in pettiness and negativity.

The project cannot possibly hurt the town. And, it could be one of those first small steps in improving the Main Street atmosphere.
