Cenex recognizes Hollis Jamison

Former Whitman County Commissioner Hollis Jamison of Garfield was awarded a $50 Tanks of Thanks fuel card from CHS, parent company of Cenex, for his work helping feed local residents.

Jamison said he drives from Garfield to Spokane twice a month to pick up food that feeds more than 135 families and seniors. He delivers between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds from Second Harvest in Spokane to Palouse, Garfield, Farmington and Elberton.

Jamison, Master of LaDow Grange, said when Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area a few years ago, he wanted to do something for those people. He and other Grange members gathered seven tons of clothing which was shipped to hurricane victims.

“Our mission is to help people,” he said.

Jamison borrows a neighbor’s small freight truck to haul the thousands of pounds of food. “The people really appreciate it,” he said.

During the holidays, the Grange and three Garfield area churches distribute entire turkey dinners to 45 to 50 families, Jamison said.

“I’m going to keep on doing it as long as I can,” he said.

The Tanks of Thanks program each month recognizes a person who does good in their community. To date, the program has rewarded 29 people from Washington state with gift cards for fuel.
