back at Empire
The high-energy big band Tuxedo Junction will come to Tekoa’s Empire Theatre Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. The 16-member ensemble, from the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area performs a repertoire of hits from the big band era of the 1930s and 40s. They also perform an array of selections from the 1950s right up to the present day.
Several of the band members also play with other area groups.
The band is a strong supporter of local charities and of higher education. In addition to donating performances to such groups as the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery and the SNAP program. They donate all their profits for scholarships which have helped students pursue their education at North Idaho College, Eastern Washington University and Spokane Falls Community College.
Tuxedo Junction last performed at the Empire a year ago, to a very appreciative crowd. Since that time the Empire, known as one of the region’s best performing arts venues, has continued to invest in physical improvements. The latest project, completed less than a month ago, was a professional repainting of the theater’s signature marquee.
Admission to Saturday’s show will be $15 for adults, $5 for students, and 12 & under free.

Prize wheel at Rosalia
Friends of the Library for Rosalia and Malden will sponsor a prize wheel at the Alice Porter Memorial Library in Rosalia, during the Rosalia Chamber of Commerce’s Fall Festival, Saturday, Oct. 20, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Prizes will include balloons, books, temporary tattoos and other fun items for children.
Pullman Arts panel seeks directors
The Pullman Arts Commission is seeking candidates to serve on its board of directors. Two positions are currently open for an appointment of three years. The commission meets the second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. The Pullman Arts Commission cultivates the visual and performing arts to enrich the quality of life of the community.
The Commission works to acquire City Council approved artwork for the City and is responsible for the acquisition, documentation and conservation of the City art collection. Persons interested in working with the arts in Pullman can find an application available online
Milk jugs to
become
skeletons
Tekoa Library Kids club meets Thursday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. to make skeletons from milk jugs. Approximately 250 milk jugs were donated by area families and restaurants in order to make the craft. More than 25 kids have signed up.
Winner of the library’s new card sign up prize was Judi McHargue. Her name was drawn from all the people who signed up for library cards in Whitman County last month. She won a $25 gift certificate to The Feeding Station.
Tekoa Library hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 6 p.m. and Thursdays, noon-6 p.m.
Hog Heaven at Dahmen
Hog Heaven Big Band will play at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Saturday, Oct. 20, from 7:30 to 9:30 for those who wish to dance or listen. The cost is $8 for a couple and $5 for a single.

Maternal grandparents are Sarah and Scott Hamilton of Pullman and Vernon and Karen Swenson of International Falls, Minn. The baby joins sister, Morgan, 9.

Samuel Alexander II, born Oct. 7 at six pounds, 15 ounces, first child to Alejandra and Samuel Sanchez of Pullman. Paternal grandparents are Abdencio and Consepcion Sanchez of Homedale, Idaho. Maternal grandparents are Marcos and Alexandra Ruiz of Othello.

MUSIC -Los Angeles-based jazz vocalist Jamie Shew, a WSU grad , will be featured in a free concert at 3:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in Kimbrough Concert Hall at WSU. Songs will be from her latest CD, “A Place for Me,” on the Bluejazz label.
Shew is coordinator of vocal jazz studies at Fullerton College. She will be accompanied by her husband, award-winning bassist Roger Shew, also a WSU alumnus, and guitarist Mike Scott.
The concert is made possible in part by a grant from the WSU Visual, Literary and Performing Arts Committee.
The WSU School of Music will host the 19th annual educational choral festival Saturday, Oct. 20, in Kimbrough music building. The final concert, also free, will be at 5 p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre.
The concert will open with the WSU Madrigal/Chamber Singers, conducted by Lori Wiest, in traditional Renaissance costume performing English and Italian madrigals and a French chanson. Four high school choirs selected based on their performance/workshop participation will be followed by the WSU Concert Choir.
Each participating choir will have performances and workshops throughout the day. Participants will hear performances by the WSU Opera Workshop, directed by Julie Anne Wieck, and University Singers and VoJazz, directed by Dean Luethi.

Spanish Storytime for Niños comes to the Colfax Library on Saturday, October 20 at 2 p.m. This free lively, early learning bilingual program is every third Saturday of the month with a combination of books, finger plays and songs in both English and Spanish for children 2-6.
Families are invited to a Pumpkin Party to celebrate fall Tuesday, October 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Festivities include games, crafts and a free miniature pumpkin sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library.
Resources about scholarships, financial aid and all that’s involved in planning for college will be discussed Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Colfax Library. Colfax Library will kick off it’s new book club with the first book club meeting will Thursday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Colfax Library. Stop by the Colfax Branch and pick up a copy of Jamie Ford’s, “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet.”
Colton library’s after school program today, Oct. 18, will have an Halloween theme. Librarian Holly Meyer will have a Halloween craft, puzzle sheets, stories, and a scary snack. Children ages kindergarten to sixth grade are welcome to join starting at 3:15 p.m.
Uniontown/Colton book club will be reading Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady by Florence King during October. Copies are available at the Uniontown Library. Discussion of the book will be Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Uniontown Library.
