Colfax netters target top NE league slots

Colfax volleyball players defeated a tough Genesee team on the Colfax court last Thursday on seniors night, and then defeated Davenport in a league match on the road Saturday to extend their win string

With a 6-0 mark in the league and one round left, the Bulldogs already have the top NE slot locked up for the first round of playoffs which will be next Saturday at Davenport.

Top five volleyball teams from the NE event will face the top five out of the SE District event in the regional round Nov. 3, and the top four finishers will qualify for the state 2B finals in the SunDome.

Colfax last Thursday booked a strong serving night to control the match against Genesee. The Bulldogs booked a 94 percent serving mark in the match with just one miss in the first game, zero in the second game and two in the last game.

Line score for the Colfax win was 25-12 25-16 and 25-20.

Senior Amelie Bruya hit 12 of the 25 points in the first game. Her last stint at the back line went from points 17 to 23. She finished 17-18 with two aces and had 22 assists against the Idaho club.

“They were a very good team. The thing we had to do was keep them from making the passes they needs to make,” Coach Sue Doering commented.

Nicole Sheer hit 11 kills against Genesee and had three blocks. Taylor Larsen had 13 kills and three blocks. Larsen also hit 8-9 serving with an ace.

Deanna Aeschliman served 5-5 with three aces.

Saturday at Davenport, the Bulldogs took the league match in another three gamer, 25-8 25-11 and 25-12.

“We just did a good job of controlling them and executing our game. That’s something we don’t always do,” Doering commented. One of the features for the match was some outstanding plays on defense. Colfax booked several points after some last ditch efforts by the back line kept a rally going and converted extra points for the Bulldogs.

Larsen capped the Colfax offense with seven serve points.

Amara Huber, who hit 27-29 serving, ran a string of 12 serve points in the third game before the Bulldogs put down match point.

Colfax will wrap up the league campaign with a trip to St. George’s Tuesday.
