Holiday open house at Dahmen barn

The first holiday open house at Dahmen Barn in Uniontown will be Dec. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cookies and coffee will be served throughout the day. Resident artists will be at work in their studios.

The barn is open every day of the week through Dec. 23, and the exhibit runs through Dec. 30. More than 120 artists and craftspeople are represented at the shop at the Barn.

A hands-on clay workshop is being offered from 10 a.m. to noon, and a workshop on corn husk doll making is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. The cost is $15 each which includes materials. See the Barn on-line calendar listing for these workshops for ages 16 and over. Registrations must be received by Dec. 6.

Friends of Hospice plan tree ceremony

The annual Tree of Lights remembrance ceremony will be conducted by Friends of Hospice next Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m. in the Norma McGregor Community Room at the Colfax Library.

The Rev. Bob Ingalls will lead the inspirational program, and a local quartet will provide music with accompaniment by Marsha Olsen.

The tree will remain up for public viewing at the library throughout the holiday season.

Bank Left plans craft, art demos

The Bank Left Christmas reception at Palouse Saturday, Dec. 1, will feature silversmith jewelry making demonstrations by Spokane artist Sandra Conti, mixed media art by Moscow artist Ross Coates and ornaments by Palouse artists Judy Finch, Pam Colbert, Kirsten Jones and Carrie Vielle.

Open house will be from 1-5 with a Bank Left Bistro Christmas luncheon served from noon to 3 p.m.

Harmony in Tekoa

Pages of Harmony, a group of Spokane-based barbershop-style singers, will perform in concert Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Empire Theatre in Tekoa. This style of singing is an American art form and was once actually performed in places like barbershops, street corners, etc.

The Pages of Harmony organization has entertained in and around Spokane area for more than 50 years with classic numbers, gospel songs and arrangements of newer pieces. The fine acoustics of the Art-Deco styled Empire Theatre will provide the ideal venue for showcasing this type of vocal performance. This will be their first visit to the Empire.

Thrifty Grandmothers

Thrifty Grandmothers of Colfax met at the library in Colfax Nov. 12 with 11 members and two visitors present. They voted to give the following monetary gifts: $5,000 to Colfax and Community Fund, $500 to the Firemen’s Toy Box, $250 each to Giving Tree, Rachel Napier and two high school FFA members and $100 each to Palouse Cares, WHMC Baby Wagon and Union Gospel Mission.

Thrifty Grandmothers will not have a December meeting, because the Christmas luncheon occurs on the meeting date. Their next meeting will be Jan. 14.

Rosalia Garden Club

Members of Rosalia Garden Club will bring their handmade, decorated wreaths and swags Friday, Nov. 29, at 1:30 p.m. to the Rosalia Mini Park to decorate the gazebo for the holiday season. This is an annual event for garden club members to help decorate the town before the city holiday celebration the first weekend in December.

The next meeting will be Dec. 5 when members attend the Christmas Tree Elegance at the Davenport Hotel at 10:30 a.m. with lunch planned at 11:30 at the Tower Safari. Following their lunch, members will visit Spokane Community College greenhouses to observe the poinsettias grown by students.

Members will gather at the United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 19 to fill the annual cheer baskets and distribute them.

The Whitman County Emergency Communications Committee meeting for Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, has been canceled. The next meeting will be Jan. 2, 2012.

All-Breed bull test begins 20th year

The 20th annual Washington Cattlemen’s All Breed Bull Test began in early November and runs until March 1 - 2. After the rigorous testing, the bulls will be sold at auction on March 27 at the Bonina Sale facility in Eltopia.

Consigned by 54 breeders, 161 bulls were weighed Nov. 3-4. The bull breeds include Angus, Hereford (polled and horned), Red Angus, SimAngus, ChiAngus and Simmental. The initial weigh-in begins the 120-day feed trial and the bulls will be fed under the supervision of Bob and Nina Lundgren at their Bonina Feed Facility at Eltopia.

“Due to the success of last year’s sale, the number of bulls offered on test had to be limited and bulls were accepted based on available breed need and past consignment history,” said Loren Hagen, WCA Breed Committee Chairman.

A stringent health, vaccination and testing protocol are supervised by the Washington Cattlemen’s Association.

“Our goal is to put out high quality bulls with proven genetics,” said Jack Field, Executive Vice President of the WCA. “Only the top bulls that have passed our performance and quality requirements will be offered for sale.”

Genetic profile enhancement through DNA samples will be used again this year on many of the bulls to be sold. Buyers will be able to make better choices for their individual breeding programs because of this increased reliability.

After the 120-day test is done, breeding soundness exams, semen tests and ultra-sound data will be compiled before the auction. Only the top rated bulls will be allowed on the sale bill.

The bulls can be viewed at any time at the Bonina facility located 15 miles north of Pasco. Progress reports can be viewed on the WCA website, http://www.washingtoncattlemen.org.
