Renovation of the Endicott Library is set to begin Jan. 2, town and library officials announced this week.
A remodel of the library, once the town’s city hall and jail, was set to begin last summer, but Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick said unexpected requirements for a handicap-accessible parking pad pushed the project cost over its initial estimate.
Town and library officials removed several items from the project, including two of four new windows, a sink for children’s programs, an indoor book return, ceiling fans, new computer tables and other furnishings.
Even with those items removed, the cost was over the initial estimate of $118,000. Total cost of the remodel is now $129,230.
Kirkpatrick noted the Thrifty Grandmothers of Colfax added a $1,000 and the Friends of the Library gave the project $8,300.
Endicott owns the building, as per a mutual agreement that requires the town provide the library a public building.
It formerly served as city hall before its office was moved to the town’s former clinic building.
