After sustaining a big loss before a home crowd Friday night in their league opener against a power-paced St. George’s team, the Bulldog boys stacked up solid wins for their next two games to move to a 4-2 overall record.
St. George's Dexter Sienko was a big factor in shutting down the Bulldog offense in the league opener Friday night at Colfax. The 6-6 junior, who missed last season with an injury, put a stop on a shot by Skylar Simonson in the second half at Colfax.Coach Reece Jenkin notes the Bulldogs will take the 4-2 into a big weekend this week when they host Reardan Friday and then travel to Northwest Christian Saturday to play the Crusaders, last seen in the state title game at the Spokane arena in March.
The Bulldogs Tuesday rolled to Davenport and out-paced the Gorillas 59-44 with a threebie demo. The win left Colfax at 1-1 in the league.
Brandon Gfeller and Brady Ellis each finished with 20 points against the Gorillas who played a close first quarter but faded after the Bulldogs put 24 points on the board in the second frame.
Coach Jenkin credited Skylar Simonson for pulling down 13 rebounds to go along with his 10 points.
Colfax Friday charged to an early lead against the St. George’s Dragons, but the guests put up a relentless defense and took control of the game with a 10-point edge in the second quarter on the way to a 54-35 win.
Coach Jenkin noted the Dragons’ pressure on defense jolted the young Bulldog team.
“I don’t think this year’s team has ever face that level of defense. It’s something we’re going to have to learn to deal with in the future, and I think we can,” Coach Jenkin commented.
Dragons Coach Ryan Peplinski had his team geared to use a double trap on Brandon Gfeller for most of the game.
Another big part of the SG win was 6-6 junior Dexter Sienko who missed most of last season with a leg fracture. Sienko finished with 20 points which he capped off by hitting a threebie.
Mark Kenney Jr. hit 13, including three treys to balance out Sienko’s inside attack.
Colfax shook off the Dragon singe Saturday when they dropped the Lakeside Eagles from Nine Mile. Brandon Gfeller had another 32-point night with seven three-point shots to rock the Eagles.
Colfax in the third quarter stacked on 11 more points onto a 32-26 halftime lead in the third quarter to take control of the non-leaguer.
